The
Solomons live at 417
Pensdale Road, "Rutherford", Ohio.
Physicist
Brian Greene has written dialogue for John Lithgow's character.
In
the first episode where William Shatner plays The Big Giant Head, he talks about the dreadful experience he had aboard an
airplane, whereupon John Lithgow exclaims, "So did I!" This is an inside joke about the Twilight Zone story, "Terror at 20,000
Feet". William Shatner played the lead role in that episode of the TV series "The Twilight Zone", and Lithgow played the lead
role in that story in Twilight Zone: The Movie.
During
its five-year run on primetime, the show underwent more than 15 time-slot changes.
During
one episode, Dick (John Lithgow) and Sally ('Kristen Johnston' ) are trying to talk to each other in the kitchen, however
Tommy and his friends are down in the garage practicing their speed-metal song. Dick goes down into the garage and begins
to preach about the sins of rock music to the teens. John Lithgow gave this same sermon in Footloose.
In
an episode dealing with the 'secret' relationship between Dick and Dr. Albright, the family becomes agitated that Mary is
staying over so much. Sally complains, "Last night she forced us to watch an A&E Biography on Susan St. James!!" Jane
Curtin (Dr. Mary Albright) and 'Susan St. James' were co-stars on the CBS sitcom "Kate & Allie".
John
Cleese plays a man calling himself Scoochie, who is sending love letters to Mary. He confronts Dick wearing a black knight
uniform in a renaissance festival. Cleese also played the black knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The
three main male characters' names are Tom, Dick and Harry.
John
Lithgow's son from his first marriage, Ian Lithgow, played Dick Solomon's student Leon throughout the series
In
the episode where they go to New York to start a different life, Harry, gets
a job as the President of NBC. As president he arranges a new schedule for the spoof of Will & Grace this series is produced
by NBC.
In
the episode "Auto EuroDicka", Dick (John Lithgow) has a fling with the mother of one of his students, Bug, played by David
DeLuise. Bug's father, also Dick's fling's ex-husband, and Bug's brothers confront Dick and attempt to teach him to have more
respect for women. Bug's father was played by David's real-life father, Dom DeLuise, and Bug's brothers were played by his
two real-life brothers, Michael and Peter DeLuise.
In
the episode in which Dick (John Lithgow) accidentally hits a chipmunk and rushes it to the vet, he has a very dramatic scene
next to the examining table where he rants about his chipmunk being in pain. He yells, "Give my chipmunk his shot!" a reference
to Terms of Endearment, in which Lithgow also appeared.
The
character 'Dick Solomon' was ranked #24 in TV Guide's list of the "25 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends"
95%
of all episode titles are a play on the word "Dick".
During
the filming of the final season, NBC refused to let the producers know whether or not they had been renewed until after the
filming of the final episode, in order to try and draw in viewers. To compensate, the creators filmed two different endings.
In the first ending, which was shown on network television, the Solomons went back to their homeworld and erased Mary's memory.
In late 2001, the second ending was shown in syndication for what was billed as the "first and only time." This "second ending"
is actually an extension of the original: Mary wakes up and goes to the Solomon's car and finds that Dick has given her the
keys (you can see Dick tucking something in her hand in the original broadcast ending). When she puts the key into the ignition,
a naked Dick appears next to her in the car and screams "ALIEN ABDUCTION! ALIEN ABDUCTION!" before grabbing Mary and disappearing
with her.
In
"Assault with a Deadly Dick," a line of dialogue was cut after the first airing. Dick is waiting at the police station with
Mary to point out the man who mugged him. Officer Don comes in and says "Time to finger your perp." Dick looks awkwardly at
Mary and replies "I keep trying, but she won't let me." When the episode was rebroadcast a few months later, Dick's line was
omitted and the laugh track was streched. This line is always cut in syndications, but when shown outside the US,
the line is intact.
